Ruthie Foster zingt op haar laatste album The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster uit 2007, het nummer Up Above My Head is oorspronkelijk van Sister Rosetta Tharpe en Marie Knight uit 1940. Het was destijds een gospel nummer, maar Ruthie Foster heeft er iets minder vrooms van gemaakt. Rob Palladino, music reviewer for Literary Illusions, believes Ruthie Foster should have found her own sound instead of Malcolm “Papa Mali” Welbourne helping her. With such an amazing voice, her fourth album, The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster might actually live up to its name.
